For years, politicians and special interests have used confusing ballot language to trick voters and sway our votes. They have even overturned the laws we passed and tried repeatedly to take away our freedom to petition.

    Amendment 6 requires all ballot summaries to be clear, unbiased, fair, accurate, and easy to understand. This ensures that voters know exactly what they’re voting on.

  • Stop Politicians from Overturning our Votes

    Amendment 6 makes it harder for politicians to change or undo citizen-led initiatives we have already voted on. It requires 80% approval in both legislative chambers to send any changes back to a vote of the people.

    Amendment 6 protects our century-old constitutional freedom to petition from attacks by politicians. It ensures citizens have the ability to be a check and balance on the legislature when they ignore our voices.

  • Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to:

    • expand the initiative and referendum petition process by making it a fundamental right;

    • allow courts to revise ballot summaries through lawsuits; 

    • prohibit the legislature from weakening initiative or referendum powers; 

    • prohibit the legislature from changing or repealing laws enacted through the initiative process, or passing laws similar to those rejected by referendum, without approval from at least 80% of both chambers; and 

    • preserve existing majority vote and signature requirements for initiative and referendum petitions?

ABOUT AMENDMENT 6

  • Amendment 6 is a proposed change to the Missouri Constitution written by the people of Missouri. If approved by voters, it would strengthen the citizen initiative process.

    Amendment 6 will:

    • Require ballot summaries to be clear, unbiased, fair, accurate, and easy to understand. 

    • Preserve our century-old constitutional freedom to petition.

    • Make it harder for politicians to change or undo what the people have already voted on.

    • The citizen initiative process has been a fundamental part of the Missouri Constitution since 1908. It gives Missouri citizens the power to directly propose and enact laws and constitutional amendments by collecting signatures and placing measures on the ballot for a public vote.

    • It is one of the most important tools Missourians have to take action when elected officials in Jefferson City won’t act on matters that are important to us. Historically, regular folks have used this process to protect their interests across party lines—banning new taxes, reining in government spending, limiting lobbyist and special interest money, and enacting ethics reforms.

    • Politicians, on both sides of the aisle, have tried to weaken or eliminate this freedom for decades.

  • This issue is being decided in the upcoming midterm general election on November 3, 2026. Key dates include:

    • Voter Registration Deadline: October 7, 2026

    • No-Excuse Early Voting Begins: October 20, 2026

    • Deadline to Request an Absentee Ballot: October 21, 2026 

    • Election Day: Tuesday, November 3, 2026
