It’s the people versus the politicians.
When it comes to ballot measures, including democracy reforms, Missouri politicians have weaponized ballot language to subvert the will of the people.
Overturning. Tricking. Delaying. Blocking. Taking away Missourians’ power.
Article I, Section 1 of the Missouri Constitution says “that all political power is vested in and derived from the people.”
So why don’t we use a ballot measure to pass a constitutional amendment that BANS power-hungry politicians from attacking the will of the people?
Why it’s possible
It would take only 0.04% of Missourians (that’s 2,500 volunteers) gathering signatures only 2 hours per week for 12 weeks to qualify this for the ballot.
Americans are rising up against politics as usual. They don’t want cheap words. They want a government responsive to the needs of regular people.
This may sound bold, but it has been done before.
How it’s been done before
In 2018, a woman named Katie Fahey in Grand Rapids Michigan, with a career working in recycling and zero experience in politics, posted on Facebook “I want to end gerrymandering in Michigan. Who wants to help? 😁” The response was overwhelming.
Regular people, almost none of whom had even worked on campaigns before, figured out together how to run a ballot initiative to end gerrymandering in Michigan.
They looked around at how redistricting was done in states across the country and realized that no one was doing it well. They approached numerous establishment groups and funders and didn’t get support. They were told they didn’t know what they were doing, and should just adopt a model from another state.
But these regular Michiganders said, “Well we live here, and we don’t like the way things are working, and we want a model that WORKS for our state!” So they wrote a policy, they went out and formed local and state-wide teams across Michigan, and together 4,000 volunteers gathered over 400,000 signatures without paying for a single one. Ultimately, yes, they needed to raise money, but when they had 4,000 volunteers, they said “Look, if each one of us starts a fundraising page and each one of us raises $10 from 10 friends each, we can hit our fundraising goal by the end of the weekend.” And they did it.
Our approach
We face the same odds. We take the same approach as Katie and her fellow activists in Michigan did.
We organize PEOPLE. We never rely on big money or powerful organizations to save us. We can make this change ourselves. We lead.
We welcome help from other groups and financial support, but we don’t wait for any group or funder to give the PEOPLE permission to secure the PEOPLE’s democracy.
Why now?
In November the majority voted for change. In this populist, anti-establishment moment, with Americans rising up against the political class, the time is right to go on offense with a volunteer-led movement. A win would lay the groundwork for future democracy reforms, protect past votes by the people, and serve as a national model to stop politicians’ abuse of ballot measures and language to subvert direct democracy.
And no matter what the politicians throw at us, if we have thousands of active volunteers, we can pass or defeat anything at the polls.

January 2025: Build our initial base.
Secure 2,400 citizen endorsements of the campaign. Encourage stories. This will recruit Missourians who can make the campaign happen.
This can be done any way you see fit: call people you know, present to other groups, send texts, send emails, share on Facebook or Blue Sky, go door-to-door, hold living room meetings in person or on Zoom/Google Meet.
Self-organize into Congressional Districts and have fun meetups! Build relationships! The organization consists only of relationships between people!
February 1-March 31 2025: Write policy together.
Obtain public input to create the policy.
Between in-person and virtual town halls, we will issue at least 10,000 invitations and get at least 3,000 Missourians to attend these events. We will hold these town halls all across Missouri so that the feedback is truly representative of the state, geographically and politically.
We’ll hold at least one statewide policy summit in March, inviting volunteers, other organizations, and everyday Missourians.
April-May 2025:
Convene another statewide policy summit in early April to decide what versions to file with the state. We will file multiple versions of the policy so that we can decide which is best later. It will then take 60 days for the government to process and for us to poll on the resulting ballot language.
In the meantime: we hold more events to recruit 2,500 volunteers who pledge to gather signatures for 2 hours per week for 12 weeks.
June 2025:
Share poll results with volunteers.
Hold a final policy summit to decide which version to gather signatures for.
Have high school and college volunteers phone bank and otherwise recruit Missourians over the summer.
July-December 2025:
Gather signatures, using both summer opportunities and fall/winter holiday opportunities.
January-April 2026:
Ensure we have enough signatures, conducting signature validation and gathering more as necessary. Turn in signatures in early May to ensure a November election (assuming polling shows that’s better than an August ballot).
May-November 2026:
Secure pledges from 2 million Missourians to vote “yes!”
Raise $8 million for campaign ads and mail.
Defeat any legislative attacks on the August or November ballot.
