KOMU: Missouri organization seeks to make it harder for lawmakers to overturn what voters pass
A group is trying to make it harder for Missouri lawmakers to pass legislation that would overturn what voters passed at the ballot box. At the same time, a group of state lawmakers is trying to make it harder for that group, and all others trying to put items on the ballot, to put measures before voters.
Benjamin Singer is a co-founder of the Respect Missouri Voters coalition, a campaign group currently raising money to put a measure before Missouri voters that would make it very difficult for lawmakers in Jefferson City to pass legislation that overturns the effects of what Missouri voters have passed.
"We were hearing from volunteers after the election that they had just gathered signatures and voted for different initiatives on the ballot, and they were sick of the last 25 years of politicians overturning the will of the people, and they didn't want that to happen again," he said. "So, they said, 'If we do a citizen initiative to save citizen initiatives, I will be in the street for that. I will work on that.'"
