RESPECT MISSOURI VOTERS CELEBRATES VICTORY OVER POLITICIANS’ AMENDMENT 4
Condemns Secretary Hoskins’ Unprecedented, Illegal Power Grab, Vows Legal Action
Jefferson City, Mo.—Tonight, Missouri voters overwhelmingly rejected Amendment 4.
Respect Missouri Voters volunteer Kate Catanio issued the following statement:
“Missouri sent a strong message in today’s election by rejecting Amendment 4. Voters deserve a fair process and the ability to make decisions without politicians standing in the way. Now, it's time to safeguard citizens’ right to enact laws and amendments at the ballot box from attacks like Amendment 4 by passing the Respect Missouri Voters Amendment on November 3rd.
“For months, nearly 2,000 volunteers, Republicans, Democrats, and independents, have united to gather more than 367,000 signatures from all 115 Missouri counties and put the Respect Missouri Voters Amendment before voters this November.
“The amendment will:
Require ballot summaries to be clear, unbiased, fair, accurate, and easy to understand.
Make it harder for politicians to change or undo citizen-approved initiatives without broad bipartisan support and approval from voters.
Preserve Missouri’s 118-year-old constitutional freedom to petition and protect citizens’ ability to hold the legislature accountable.
“Missourians created the initiative petition process as a check and balance when elected officials ignore the voices of the people. The Respect Missouri Voters Amendment protects that right for today’s voters and future generations.
“Because of the widespread bipartisan support that brought this amendment to the ballot, the Secretary of State is attempting to silence the voters before we have a chance to have our say. We’re prepared to take every necessary legal action to defend Missouri voters from the Secretary of State’s unprecedented abuse of power.”
“Today, the Missouri Secretary of State invented an unprecedented, illegal ability to block Missouri voters from accessing their Constitutional right to have a say on measures at the ballot,” said former Sen. Bob Johnson (R-Lee’s Summit). “This brazen disregard for the will of the people is exactly why the people of Missouri came together to gather signatures, donate, and place the Respect Missouri Voters Amendment on the ballot for November, because we are sick of these games in Jefferson City.”
