Kansas City Star Endorses Amendment 6, Urges Missourians to Vote YES to Protect Voters' Rights

~ Star Editorial Board Says Missourians Deserve to Make Decisions "Without Political Meddling" and Calls for Protecting the People's Voice at the Ballot Box ~

Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Star editorial board today announced its strong endorsement of Amendment 6, urging Missourians to vote YES on November 3 to protect the state's 118-year-old initiative petition process and prevent politicians from overturning the will of voters.

In its endorsement of Amendment 6, the Kansas City Star emphasized that Missouri voters deserve the final say on the laws they approve at the ballot box, writing:

"Because all Missourians deserve the right to initiate constitutional amendments, state statutes and veto referendums without political meddling, we strongly recommend a yes vote on Amendment 6."

The editorial board highlighted how Missouri politicians have repeatedly attempted to undermine voter-approved laws, even after citizens gathered hundreds of thousands of signatures and won majority support at the ballot box.

 The Star wrote:

"Yet that has not stopped lawmakers in Jefferson City from trying to undo what voters approved — a problem Amendment 6 was written to solve."

The editorial also emphasized the importance of Amendment 6's requirement that lawmakers secure an 80% supermajority in both legislative chambers before changing or repealing voter-approved laws, protecting decisions made by Missouri voters from being overturned by a narrow partisan majority.

"An 80% threshold would prevent a narrow partisan majority from ignoring the will of the people and how they vote," the editorial stated.

In closing, the Star emphasized that protecting the initiative petition process is not a partisan issue, but a fundamental right for all Missourians:

"The initiative petition process is not a partisan issue — it is a safety net for all Missourians when lawmakers at the state Capitol will not act in their best interests."

Amendment 6 would enshrine the initiative petition process as a fundamental constitutional right, protect voter-approved laws from being overturned by politicians without an 80% legislative supermajority, and prevent lawmakers from making it harder for citizens to bring issues directly to the ballot. The amendment would not change the existing signature requirements or majority vote threshold for citizen-led initiatives.

Amendment 6 is also endorsed by the Missouri Retired Teachers Association, Missouri National Education Association, Missouri AFL-CIO, former U.S. Senator Jack Danforth, former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander and former Republican State Senator Bob Johnson, among organizations and individuals that have announced endorsements of Amendment 6.

The Yes on Amendment 6 campaign has released a series of television and digital advertisements explaining the measure, including its most recent television ad featuring three Missourians who may disagree on politics but agree that politicians should not overturn citizen-led initiatives approved by voters.

Missourians will vote on Amendment 6 on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. No-excuse absentee voting began Tuesday, Oct. 20.
