Victory for Missouri Voters: Amendment 6 Wins at the Ballot Box

~Missourians voted overwhelmingly to pass Amendment 6 on November 3~

Jefferson City, Missouri – Tonight, Missouri voters sent a clear message: the initiative petition process belongs to the people. Amendment 6 won overwhelmingly with Missouri voters across all corners of the state.

Missouri’s Constitution begins by stating, ‘all political power is vested in and derived from the people.’ But for far too long, Missouri politicians from both parties have blatantly overturned voter-approved initiatives, while also conspiring to effectively end the citizen-led initiative process all together. Worse yet, these same politicians play political games and write ballot summaries meant to mislead Missouri voters, brazenly referring to this deception as ballot candy.

The following are quotes from coalition and campaign spokespersons.

Jack Cardetti, spokesman for the Yes on 6 campaign, said:

“Tonight, Missourians from every corner of this beloved state said the time for these political games is over and the time for holding politicians accountable and protecting our constitutional rights are here to stay. The overwhelming approval of Amendment 6 is a testament to those Missouri who are tired of having their voices ignored or their votes overturned and demanded that we restore voters as the final check and balance on the politicians we elect. The historic victory makes it abundantly clear that the ability to petition our own government is not a political issue, it’s a deep-rooted Missouri value that millions are willing to protect. A sincere thanks to the tens of thousands of volunteers that got this grassroots effort on the ballot and across the finish line. Between the overwhelming passage of Amendment 6 tonight, coupled with the tremendous defeat of Amendment 4 in August, our democracy in Missouri is significantly stronger and worth protecting for generations to come.”

Benjamin Singer, co-founder and Executive Director of Respect Missouri Voters, said:

“Tonight, Missourians did more than pass Amendment 6 – we proved what’s possible when Republicans, Democrats, independents, and people from all walks of life come together around a shared belief that our voices and our votes should matter. Together, we’ve build something much bigger than a campaign – a grassroots movement rooted in communities across Missouri. And this victory is just the beginning of what we can accomplish together to build a democracy that truly works for all people.”

Jake Hummel, President of Missouri AFL-CIO, said:

“Tonight is a great victory for working families all across our state and for our democracy. The Missouri AFL-CIO and our members believe deeply in the initiative petition and referendum process as a way of holding politicians accountable and protecting the paychecks of hardworking Missourians. Without the initiative petition and referendum process, Missouri, against the wishes of an overwhelming majority of the electorate, would be a so-called “right-to-work” state. For 118 years Missourians have enjoyed the constitutional right to put important issues on the ballot, and we were proud to play a major role in protecting and strengthening those rights this election.”
