Happy Independence Day!
As we reflect on 250 years of this great experiment in democracy, let's remember one of our greatest freedoms — the freedom to vote — and continue doing the work to protect and defend the rights that those before us struggled for.
Right now, that means defeating Amendment 4. We can stop this latest threat to voter power in Missouri by making sure we show up to vote this summer.
The deadline to register to vote or update your voter registration for the August 4th primary is this Wednesday, July 8th. Because voter rolls are purged regularly, your registration could be outdated if you have recently moved, changed your name, or skipped an election. Take 60 seconds now to verify your registration using the links on our voter hub to ensure your voice counts. Then, help Respect MO Voters get out the vote. |

Knock On Doors to Help Us Reach More Voters
We are focusing on the 20% of voters who actually show up to vote in primary elections. The best way to find them and persuade them to vote NO is to knock on their door and have a conversation with them in person, an impact that could make all the difference in the fate of Amendment 4. |

Direct Democracy is Important in a Republic: Amendment 4 Threatens our Voice |
Let’s take a trip back to civics class. The U.S. is a republic; we elect representatives to make laws on our behalf. Yet, direct democracy has always balanced this system at the state and local level. In Missouri, this principle is enshrined in our Constitution:
“The people reserve power to propose and enact or reject laws and amendments to the constitution by the initiative, independent of the general assembly” — Missouri Constitution, Article III, Sec. 49 (Adopted Nov. 3, 1908)
Direct democracy is a vital and normal check on the power of politicians. For 118 years, the citizen initiative process has given Missourians the ability to hold politicians accountable. By changing the rules to make future initiatives nearly impossible to pass, Amendment 4 asks voters to surrender their power. |

With all the work she's doing for the tech team, Noel Polhemus must feel like she's riding white water, but when she's out on the river in her kayak, she likes to take it slow: "I like to take it slow, look around at nature and talk to people."
Noel is new to Respect MO Voters: she's been with us for four months, helping out with our website, managing our Google Docs, even doing some data entry where needed. But she's been around the block a few times when it comes to volunteer work. She's a frequent volunteer in civic causes in Jefferson City. See you at the celebration when our amendment passes in November, Noel! |
