Amendment 4 proponents will be spreading confusion from now until August 4, so each week, we’ll arm you with the truth about how this would really hurt Missouri democracy—one fact at a time, starting with it's strict new geographic requirement. |
Amendment 4's One District Veto
For 118 years, when a citizen-proposed constitutional amendment wins a majority of votes in Missouri, it passes. But under Amendment 4, these amendments would need a separate majority vote within every single one of Missouri’s eight congressional districts.
Corrupt politicians want you to believe this would protect rural areas, but federal law requires all districts to be drawn with equal populations. Every district already has equal voting power. |
| | |
If a proposed amendment wins a massive majority in seven districts but gets just 49% in the last one, the entire measure fails. That means one single district can veto and cancel out what the rest of the state wants. |

Kris Savage freely admits it took a bit of friendly "arm-twisting" from Benjamin Singer before she got involved with Respect MO Voters and took on her initially-small team of 28 in the Springfield area. Lo and behold, she wound up with a team of 157 and proved a consummate communicator and organizer. "People like me as a cheerleader," she says.
She expects her team to be ready to go when it's time to gather at Springfield polling places to oppose Amendment 4 on Aug. 4. After all, it's transparently unfair. What kind of baseball game would it be, she asks, if you had to outscore your opponent in all nine innings to win? (See the Fact of the Week above for details.) Thanks for keeping us on the same page, Kris! |
